FDA Guidelines & Isolation Gowns
A surgical gown is regulated as a Class II medical device. It is intended to be worn by healthcare personnel during surgical procedures to provide a barrier against microorganisms and body fluids.
Critical Zones: For surgical gowns, critical zones include the front of the body (shoulders to knees) and arms (wrist to above the elbow). Surgical isolation gowns are used for medium to high-risk contamination, requiring larger critical zones. In isolation gowns, all areas except bindings, cuffs, and hems are considered critical zones.
